Enrichment Experiences
Since our emotions and relationships permeate every aspect of our lives, there are countless opportunities to consider how we behave towards others and how we consider ourselves and our own feelings. Discussing characters in books and attempting to understand them can be a powerful tool for examining this.
We run a Citizenship Day every year, where we give children experiences to encourage them to be good citizens. In the past, we have invited local councillors to talk about their policies, focused on the environment with an opportunity to hear from Greenpeace and handle reptiles and gone out to places in our community to find out more about where we live.
The Life Education Centre visits every 2 years to educate children on the issue of peer pressure and an understanding of how drugs can affect our bodies. In 2024 they will be coming on Thursday 21st March and Friday 22nd March to deliver programmes for Years 4, 5 and 6.
The Year 4 programme is "It's Great to be Me" and will cover the importance of a healthy brain as well as a healthy body. Children recognise that we are all unique and that each of us needs to take responsibility for our own safety and make our own choices, no matter what our peers are doing.
The Year 5 programme is "Friends". Here children are given opportunities to consider the effect of drugs on the body, including caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. There is a chance to practise assertiveness skills and recognising our own feelings.
The Year 6 programme is "Decisions". The children will explore in greater depth how we nurture our physical and mental health. We discuss the effects of drugs on the organs and systems of the body including caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cannabis and solvents. Peer pressure is explored and we discuss the skills needed to function within a peer group.
