Computing
Computing lies at the heart of our daily lives and increasingly connects us with our fellow human beings. Through computing we empower children to use digital tools with confidence and with a growing understanding of the opportunities and risks connected with new technologies. Most of our computing takes the form of projects in which we take on a role, create something wonderful or solve a problem: we are photographers and artists, data collectors and web designers, video game programmers and more. Throughout these projects we teach Online Safety to prepare children for a future in which they will navigate the ever-increasingly online world with compassion and a critical mind.
Since September 2024, we have been following the 'Teach Computing' scheme, which has been designed by the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE). The scheme is evidence-based and underpinned by research. Lessons are delivered with a focus on the '12 principles of computing pedagogy', a summary of which can be found in the document '12 computing pedagogy principles' below.
Lessons at Fulbourn Primary School weave in the three strands of computing: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy. Every school year, children will experience 3 different blocks of learning, lasting a term each: Computing Systems and Networks, Creating Media, and Programming. The units have been organised into a 2-year cycle, details of which can be found under 'subject progression' in the index.
